Big Smoke Poetry is dedicated to the life and legacy of Raymond Souster.

With a writing career spanning over 70 years, Raymond Souster has long stood as an essential figure in Canadian poetry. During his life, he published over 50 volumes of poems and received such honours as the Governor General’s Award in Poetry and the City of Toronto Book Award. But what really set Souster apart was his ongoing commitment to the development of poetry in Canada. He founded the groundbreaking Contact Press in the 1950s, and served as the first president of the League of Canadian Poets in 1967. A quiet and unassuming man by nature, Souster left a remarkable footprint upon the landscape of Canadian Literature.

Big Smoke Poetry wishes to carry on Raymond Souster’s dedication to poetry by showcasing poets from across Canada, with a special focus on writers from Mr. Souster’s beloved hometown of Toronto.
